Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aham Onyike has conducted surgical missions to various parts of Nigeria and Africa, providing free care for patients there.
His work was initially done by taking multidisciplinary teams from the U.S. to various parts of Nigeria working in collaboration with various state governments and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health. Some of the states visited include Abia, Imo, Enugu, Cross River, Uyoe, Lagos, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Ekiti, Kaduna, and Kano. Countries visited include Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, and South Africa.
In fact, it was Dr. Onyike who performed the very first total hip replacement surgeries in Imo state at the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Orlu. He was also the first to perform a total knee replacement surgery in Ekiti state.
To ensure sustainability and longitudinal continuity of care, Dr. Onyike established two different locations in Nigeria under the Center for Advanced Specialty Surgery. These specialty hospitals provide a comprehensive spectrum of orthopedic and other surgical services, including charity work. The team has provided surgical treatment to hundreds suffering from advanced and complex orthopedic injuries and conditions. Treatment has included joint replacements, sports and trauma medicine, deformity correction, and spine surgery. The team has provided standard of care surgical services to patients in Nigeria who previously would have had to travel outside the country.
This is a nonprofit foundation created by Dr. Onyike and his colleagues to provide orthopedic surgical care to restore mobility in numerous patients afflicted by various conditions.
The foundation raises resources to provide charity care, including complex joint replacement surgeries in Nigeria.
